So, for fairly obvious reasons, I have lots of thoughts about wedding ceremonies/wedding parties/processing, blah blah blah, and while I do think that this is actually totally charming and lovely (Videogum has a pretty good defense of it here), I have to say that this is basically the meanest thing you can do to your bridesmaids/groomsmen.
I was at my cousin’s wedding two weeks ago (as was Videogum’s Gabe, for the record…jealous?), and they had a slightly less ambitious but similarly cute/quirky procession—the wedding party walked down the aisle to Lithium, which required pretty precise timing, and moshing at appropriate moments…and, like in this video, it was 99% amusing and adorable, mainly because the wedding party consisted mostly of actors and stand-up comics and people equally comfortable in the spotlight. HOWEVER, there were one or two people (just like there are a few in this video) who couldn’t quite pull off the quirkiness. They were just a little too self-conscious and a little too embarrassed…and there are very few things more uncomfortable than watching someone deliberately make a fool of themselves when they aren’t really prepared to deliberately make a fool of themselves…(it’s like watching someone forced into singing Karaoke when they really, really don’t want to and really, really can’t sing…I’m cringing just thinking about it.)
Anyway, this is all to say that while I am all for people doing this if they can pull it off, my bridesmaids/groomsmen can breathe a collective sigh of relief: all I’ll require is that you get from Point A to Point B without falling down.
